Themes are always exciting for my students. They are a great way to make learning fun and keep kids engaged as they learn math, grammar, reading, writing, science, history, and crafts with a fun theme topic. Study all about shoes through these shoe themed activities and worksheets for primary grades. Teaching through themes lets students focus on one learning concept through a variety of approaches and keeps the students excited while learning. These shoe theme activites and worksheets for primary grades are guarantee to spice up your students’ learning and engagement.
History Of Shoes:
We started off the unit learning about the history of shoes and how they evolved over time through different ages.
We discussed how the early man tried different ways to protect his feet from sharp and pointy objects and weather effects. This gave the students an idea of where the history of shoes really started from although we do not exactly know who really invented the shoes.
We also brainstormed how shoes changed over time and how they are better now and more comfortable to wear. Then, we also looked at the different types of shoes we have now for different purposes and went over what makes each of them unique and useful. We discussed sneakers, running shoes, flip flops, high heels, cleats, and the list goes on.
Shoe Themed Worksheets And Activities for Reader’s Workshop:
For our language art, we dove into the book “Those Shoes” by Maribeth Boelts. Since the time I read this book the first time, I had always wanted to bring it to my class as a part of a bigger unit and this theme was the perfect fit for it.
What Book Study unit is complete without any new words learned? We built our vocabulary all the while diving deep into everything about shoes.
We also focused on a variety of reading strategies to enhance the students’ understanding and comprehension skills.
We managed to work on something for our bulletin boards as well while focusing on the reading strategies.
You can get the posters to teach these reading strategies over here.
Shoe Themed Activities For Math:
Here are a few activities we did in Math while covering this theme. We learned to compare expressions using shoe manipulatives. There were activities of matching and sorting expressions for addition and subtraction.
We had three activities to go with our shoe theme.
Shoe Themed Worksheets And Activities For Writer’s Workshop:
We had to bring in some writing to go with this theme. We covered a variety of writing genres in our writer’s block. For Procedural writing, students wrote the steps of how to tie their shoe laces.
We also did opinion and narrative writing to keep it interesting.
You can find all these resources over here.
